Mary Ellen Copeland, MS, MA
Mary Ellen Copeland, MS, MA is an author, educator,
and mental health advocate who has specialized in the successful management of
psychiatric symptoms since 1988. Her work grew out of her own frustration in
dealing with the extreme ups and downs of mood that had plagued her much of her
life and is based on her intensive nationwide studies of thousands of people
who have psychiatric symptoms. Ms. Copeland is the author of The Depression Workbook: A Guide to Living
with Depression and Manic Depression, Living
without Depression and Manic Depression: A Guide to Maintaining Mood Stability,
Wellness Recovery Action Plan, Adolescent
Depression Workbook, The Worry
Control Workbook, Winning Against

Winning Against Relapse Program and Living with Depression and Manic Depression
and the co-producer of the video Coping
with Depression. She is currently co-producing a video, Wellness Workshop, with The Mental
Illness Education Project, collaborating on the development of seven self-help
booklets for the Center for Mental Health Services (a federal agency), and
continuing her series of recovery skills workshops all over the world for
consumer groups, mental health agencies and facilities, managed care groups,
and universities.
Abraham Feingold, Psy.D.
Abraham Feingold, Psy.D. received his undergraduate degree
from Oberlin College, conducted his doctoral studies in professional
psychology at the University of Denver, and completed an internship and
concurrent fellowship in clinical psychology with the Harvard Medical
School. He has nearly 20 years of wide-ranging experience as a
psychotherapist, supervisor, consultant, and administrator. In addition to
Harvard, Dr. Feingold has held faculty appointments at the Boston University
School of Medicine, the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of
South Florida, and the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is
licensed as a psychologist in Massachusetts and Florida. Currently, Dr.
Feingold runs an HIV-related consulting practice from Boston. He has been
engaged by the University of Miami to research, write, and format a
quarterly newsletter on mental health and HIV issues that will reach a
mental health provider audience throughout Florida. He also serves as
consultant to the Health Resources & Services Administration and the
Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, two branches of the
U.S. Public Health Service focusing on health, mental health, and substance
abuse training and services. In addition, he serves as chair of a
national-level steering committee focused on the training of mental health
providers in the delivery of HIV-related services, performs site visits, and
offers technical assistance.
John M. Grohol, Psy.D.
John M. Grohol, Psy.D. is a specialist in online mental health services,
an author, and a leading Internet consultant. He received his graduate
training in clinical psychology from Nova Southeastern University and
his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware. A pioneer
in psychology online since 1991, Dr. Grohol was founder and Editor-in-Chief
of Perspectives: A Mental Health Magazine, and Associate Editor of Behavior OnLine
and the bimonthly newsletter PsychNews International. He is also an Associate Editor
for the print journal, Journal of Technology in Human Services.
Dr. Grohol was Senior Editor of Health Resources Online: A Guide for Mental Health and
Addiction Specialists (Manisses, 1997) and published his first book in 1997,
The Insider's Guide to Mental Health Resources Online (Guilford, 2000 edition).
He co-founded, designed, developed, and for nearly four years directed Mental Help Net,
one of the Web's ten most-trafficked mental health portals online. He also recently oversaw
mental health content and development for drkoop.com. Dr Grohol is on the faculty of the Cape Cod Institute
and has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN & Time, The Crier Report,
and local broadcasts. He is also a recognized expert on online behavior and Internet addiction,
and has presented his work at nearly two-dozen professional conferences over the past five years.
He was one of the founding members and the first president of the International Society for
Mental Health Online, a non-profit advocacy organization. Dr. Grohol is a lead volunteer
editor for the Open Directory Project, an open source programmer, and maintains his own
top-20 mental health presence at his personal Web site, Psych Central.
Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D.
Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D. is licensed in Massachusetts as
a psychologist and as a marriage and family therapist. She has been working
as a psychotherapist and educator for nearly 30 years. A prolific writer,
she has authored advice columns and a website for parents, articles and
books on classroom discipline for teachers, and programs for schools and
industry that focus on helping people be more responsible for themselves and
get along better with others. She has presented workshops for parents,
teachers, and mental health professionals throughout the United States and
Canada. Currently, she is the Clinical Director of the Adult Outpatient
Services Program of a Community Mental Health Center in Western
Massachusetts. Dr. Hartwell-Walker holds a master's degree in counseling
psychology from the Alfred Adler Institute in Chicago and a master's degree
and a doctoral degree in psychological education from the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst. Her formal education has been greatly enhanced by
a 32-year marriage, four children, and active involvement in her community.
Deborah E. Kruger
Deborah E. Kruger is the owner and founder of PsychBilling, a
full-service medical billing agency specializing in services for the mental
health sector since 1981. Her clients include hospitals and mental health
providers throughout the U.S. Between 1975 and 1981, Ms. Kruger was an
independent grantwriter and financial consultant to numerous New
England-based non-profit agencies.
Gilbert Levin, Ph.D.
Gilbert Levin, Ph.D. is a professor of epidemiology and social
medicine and of psychiatry, emeritus at the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine. He is the founder of a nationally prominent doctoral
program in health psychology and the founder/director of the Cape Cod
Institute, a summer-long series of continuing education courses for
mental health and applied behavioral science professionals since
1980. Dr. Levin is a fellow of the American Psychological Association
and of the Academy for Behavioral Medicine Research, as well as an
author of two books that use computer simulation to analyze health
and mental health policies. He was a founding editor of Health Care
Management Review and an editor of Computers in
Psychiatry/Psychology. In collaboration with Elizabeth Levin, he
developed widely-distributed educational software. For many years,
Dr. Levin has been the editor and publisher of Behavior OnLine, a
gathering place for mental health and applied behavioral science
professionals on the World Wide Web.
Maressa Hecht Orzack, Ph.D.
Maressa Hecht Orzack, Ph.D. is a Massachusetts-licensed psychologist, a faculty member
with the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Program at McLean Hospital, and a lecturer
in the Department of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School. As a clinical
behavior therapist, Dr. Orzack specializes in the treatment of addictive and
impulsive behavioral problems such as gambling, substance and alcohol abuse, eating
disorders, and sex addiction. In 1996, Dr. Orzack founded and continues to
serve as coordinator of the Computer Addiction Service at McLean Hospital. This
program offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment services for individuals
suffering from computer addiction; services are also extended to those affected
by their actions and behavior.
Elbert Siegel, DSW
Elbert Siegel, DSW has been providing leadership to the
graduate and undergraduate social work programs at Southern Connecticut
State University for the past ten years. He has been a professional social
worker for over 30 years, and has been a professor of social work for the
past 21 years. Currently, Dr. Siegel is chairman of the Department of Social
Work at Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to his career in social
work education, Dr. Siegel taught high school social studies, administered a
resettlement agency for immigrants and refugees, and directed programs at
two community centers and three camps. His research has centered on distance
education in higher education, services to immigrants and refugees, services
to the aging, and more recently, management issues in social welfare
agencies. He has received 13 awards and grants in the past 15 years, and has
been published in many respected professional journals. Dr. Siegel received
a BA from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an MS from Canisius
College, an MSW from the University of Connecticut, and a DSW from Columbia
University.
Robert Stone, MSW, LCSW
Robert Stone, MSW, LCSW has been a counselor for 25 years.
He is an LCSW (licensed, certified social worker) with a master's degree in
social work from Smith College School of Social Work. He has been a member
of the faculty at Southern Connecticut State University in the School of
Social Work, and at Yale University, in the School of Medicine's Department
of Psychiatry. Mr. Stone has taught various classes on relationship therapy
and adolescence. He has worked at Clifford Beers Child Guidance Clinic, at a
family service agency in New Haven and at Yale Behavioral Health Services,
and is now engaged in a private practice. Mr. Stone graduated from Oberlin
College with a degree in Economics.
John R. Suler, Ph.D.
John R. Suler, Ph.D. has been a professor of psychology at Rider University since 1982.
In addition to teaching a range of undergraduate courses, Dr. Suler’s other professional
activities include the practice of psychotherapy as a Pennsylvania-licensed psychologist,
Web publishing, research on mental imagery and creativity, the psychology of cyberspace,
and the relationship of Eastern philosophy to Western psychology. He has created and continues
to expand three comprehensive Web sites: “Teaching Clinical Psychology,” a large collection of
resources for teachers; “The Psychology of Cyberspace,” a hypertext book on how individuals and
groups behave on the Internet; and “Zen Stories to Tell Your Neighbors,” an award-winning site.
Dr. Suler is also consulting editor for Behavior Online, a member of the editorial
board of CyberPsychology and Behavior, an executive member of the International Society
for Mental Health Online, editor of The Contemporary Media Forum for the Journal of Applied
Psychoanalysis, consulting editor for the Journal of Virtual Environments, staff writer for
Cybertower’s Self-Help and Psychology Magazine, and host for the Life Online conference in
Howard Rheingold's Brainstorm’s Community. His work has been reported by the New York Times,
the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, the Chicago Sun Times, CNN, MSNBC, U.S. News and
World Report, NBC Nightly News, the APA Monitor, and the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Dr. Suler received his BA in psychology from SUNY Stony Brook in 1977 and his doctorate in clinical
psychology from SUNY Buffalo in 1982.
